Irrational Man

I love Woody Allen. I know that's a bit of an inflated statement coming from someone who has yet to see the classics, so perhaps I should rephrase: I love the Woody Allen films I have seen thus far and am pretty sure I will like the rest of his work in general. He lures you into a false sense of predictability with his recurring reconstructions of atmospheric whimsy and nostalgia — not to mention the re-implementation of his signature font and credit roll — but the truth is, you never really know what to expect from him, not really, and that is what always makes going to the movies when he is on the bill ever so delightful!

The subject matter of this particular installment is extremely dark, but it is infused with a charming (and, in all probability, intentionally juxtaposed) lightness that I find absolutely irresistible. The questions it forces one to ponder and themes explored are honest and real and full of human pathos; the narrative and progression thereof are seamless, without being too overt. Feelings conjured here echo my reaction to Birdman (coincidentally also starring Emma Stone): inspired, energized, mysticized. A film of timeless relevance. I can only recommend it, and that wholeheartedly!
